The Great Canadian Equalizer

Commissioned by Department Public Works Canada, Capital Region; Jim Strutt, Architect, 1975-79

The concept of this demographic/historical mural grew out of the failure of the 1971 Victoria conference over constitutional reform and the ensuing discord between the provinces and federal government over the division of powers. It is an artist's vision or solution to power sharing in Canada. In the mural every region gets equal time and space. Canada is divided into 15 geographical regions. Each region comprises four parts: dictionary definition; land area, represented by red in proportion to the largest area, Quebec; population, represented in black (largest -- Ontario); and a lineal map of region (Newfoundland and Labrador are separated for aesthetic, not political reasons). The mural is flanked by an explanatory text, biographical information, and numbered identification panels.

Developing Toronto

Commissioned by Kenair, 500 Avenue Road, Toronto

This painting depicts the skyline and waterfront of Toronto. It symbolically locates Lake Ontario in the foreground. A silver line (the Don Valley/Gardiner Expressway) runs from the top right to the front and then left of the painting. It suggests the dynamic growth of Toronto.

A suggestion of a map of Toronto is in the background, again it relates to growth and development. The painting in the background area will act as a textured membrane of Toronto and subtly focusing on the green spaces and some particular sections of the city.

The internal framing of the painting is a direct quote to the architectural drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright, and compliments the architectural qualities of the architectural drawings in your building.

While the Inuit tapestry speaks to its own time and place it is my hope that our painting will speak to the Toronto of today.
